Cryogenetics Ltd. based in Norway, in cooperation with Tri-Gen Fish Improvement Ltd and Creative Salmon Company Ltd. of Canada, recently announced the development of an innovative cryo-preservation protocol for milt from Chinook salmon.

During a two-step trial period in 2009 and 2010, Chinook milt was cryo-preserved to test the cryo-preservation protocol used by Cryogenetics on other salmon species. According to Cryogenetics, the method provided a 95% average, which they say is very promising as a functioning commercial alternative for Chinook producers.

“It is expected that the cryo-preservation technologies will have a positive impact on how breeding companies and conservation authorities can safely store and later use genes,” notes a press release from the company. “With the use of the Cryogenetics product SquarePack® 1.000 Chinook eggs can be fertilized by one cryo-preserved unit.”

Cryogenetics Ltd. specializes in developing cryo-preservation technologies for fish milt and embryos, and provides commercial products for milt from Atlantic salmon, rainbow trout and cod. Tri-Gen Fish Improvement Ltd. specializes in research, development and management of coho salmon, Chinook salmon, Atlantic salmon and rainbow trout broodstock programs throughout the Pacific Northwest and Western Canada. Creative Salmon Company Ltd. was established in 1990 and is one of only a few growers of Chinook salmon in the world.
